What is the 60:30:10 Rule?

The 60:30:10 rule is a simple guideline to balance colors in a space, ensuring it looks cohesive and visually appealing. Here's how it works:

60% Dominant Color: This should be the main color in your room, covering large areas like walls, floor finishes, main cabinets, and large pieces of furniture like sofas. This dominant color sets the tone and foundation of your space.
30% Secondary Color: This color supports the dominant color, adding depth and interest. Use it in elements like curtains, rugs, secondary furniture pieces, and smaller cabinetry. It should complement but contrast enough to create interest.
10% Accent Color: This is your pop of color that adds personality and vibrancy to your room. Apply it sparingly in accessories like accent pillows, plants, artwork, and feature walls. The accent color should stand out and create focal points.

Example Application:

Imagine a living room where the dominant color is soft beige (60%), the secondary color is warm gray (30%), and the accent color is vibrant teal (10%). The beige could cover the walls and main sofa, the gray on the rugs and side chairs, and the teal could be introduced through pillows, artwork, and a few decorative pieces. This combination creates a harmonious and inviting space.

Difference Between Rise and Riser in Staircases

Understanding the terminology and details of staircase design is crucial for both functionality and aesthetics. Two key terms often confused are "rise" and "riser."

Rise: The rise refers to the vertical distance from the top of one step to the top of the next step. It is the height one must step up to progress to the next step. Ensuring a consistent rise in height is important for safety and comfort.
Riser: The riser is the vertical element that connects one tread (the part you step on) to the next. It forms the front of the step and can be open or closed. Closed risers provide a traditional look and additional support, while open risers offer a modern, airy feel.

Step Details in Staircase Design

When designing a staircase, attention to detail is paramount. Here are some key aspects to consider:

Tread: This is the horizontal part of the step where you place your foot. The depth of the tread should be wide enough to comfortably accommodate a foot, typically around 10-11 inches.
Nosing: The nosing is the edge of the tread that projects beyond the riser. It provides extra space for the foot and enhances safety by increasing the visible surface area of each step.
Stringer: The stringer is the structural support that runs along each side or the center of the staircase. It holds the treads and risers in place and can be either visible or hidden.
Balustrade: This includes the handrail, balusters (vertical posts), and newel posts (main supporting posts). The balustrade provides support and safety while adding an architectural element to the staircase.
